The pickleball courts on LBCC’s Albany campus are a popular place to play and learn the sport of pickleball. In 2019 the city of Albany would replace the tennis courts with pickleball courts for an estimated $300,000, and LBCC would then be responsible for maintaining the courts. In April of 2020 it was officially 300,000 to officially renovate the old tennis courts into 8 pickleball courts and one sports court for tennis. By August of 2021 the renovation was finished and their was now 12 pickleball courts. There was some criticism of the $330,000 project of why the city needs to spend so much on just pickleball courts instead of things like homelessness. There was also a lot of positive talk and excitement from the Albany Pickleball Club and some community members saying they would be well used. Pickleball is a popular paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It is played on a smaller court with a perforated plastic ball and solid paddles....
If you have ventured near LBCC’s pickleball courts you have seen all the workers on the roof of the Periwinkle Center, along with the fenced up area where people usually park at the Albany campus. The Periwinkle Child Development Center is home to the child resource center. All the workers and closed fence was due to the expansion and remodeling of the building. Now the work is done and students, staff and their families will reap the fruits of the labor. On Tuesday, Feb. 13, it was time for the grand opening, introducing the newly remodeled building. Former teachers, college board members, and Albany City Council members along with the mayor showed up to add to the importance of this event and show their support. From the outside the Periwinkle Center may be just like any other college building, but going inside you can see the magic in the air among the people that have a part in helping children. Wonder and warmth filled the air as these compassionate people displayed big smiles and...
I just got back from an amazing trip to Pittsburgh and have to share all the exciting changes happening in the Steel City. The Steel City is transforming before our eyes into a vibrant, modern metropolis while still holding onto its unique character and history. The Pittsburgh skyline looks better than ever, with new skyscrapers such as the Tower at PNC Plaza adding some flair. The parks along the riverfront, including the North Shore Riverfront Park, are beautiful places to spend a sunny day. I visited the Andy Warhol Museum, which had to be a stop and must-see, featuring Andy Warhol’s pop art. Pittsburgh is Warhol’s place of birth, and Carnegie holds his largest collection of artworks and archival material. The Heinz family, famous for the Heinz ketchup, settled in Pittsburgh in 1840 as Henry Heinz emigrated from Bavaria to the south side of the city. His mother followed three years later. They have had a big presence since 1890 where they had the Heinz company factory. Y...
